Manual lymphatic drainage consists of gentle techniques that increase the flow of lymphatic fluid to be excreted out of your body naturally. Lymphatic fluid accumulates in the body after surgery which can lead to swelling and discomfort. Getting these massages can help decrease swelling, increase healing time, improve skin texture, sensitivity and help reduce the formation of fibrosis.
Although you can start at any time, the basic recommendation is starting 3-7 days post-op, with 6 sessions within the first two weeks. Any massages after the two weeks will depend on your recovery. The closer together the massages, the more you will see the benefits and results of the massage. Every surgery and client is different, so we will work out a plan for each individual depending on what your body needs.
Most clients tend to be worried that massage will hurt after surgery. MLD massage is very gentle, and should never cause any pain. Some people might feel a little discomfort the first week due to just having surgery. The techniques used are enough to stimulate your lymphatic system, which is just beneath your skin, to trigger the flow of lymph fluid. The gentle pumping movements and coordinated strokes are usually described as very relaxing. Some clients feel relief even after the first session. Here, we don't push fluid out of your incisions; as that can increase the possibility of infections, more inflammation, fibrosis and seromas.
Seromas are a collection of fluid that can form right under the skin after surgery. The fluid is usually clear or yellowish and is made up of blood plasma, lymphatic fluid and tissue. It is known to have a water balloon effect when palpated. Fibrosis consists of hard lumps that involves the thickening and scarring of connective tissue right beneath the skin. Some hardness after surgery is normal as this is just swelling, which is softer than fibrosis. Between one to three months fibrosis can possibly form. What causes fibrosis and seromas? Inadequate aftercare (not correctly wearing garments, strenuous activity, not resting, excessive friction, trauma, etc.) Seromas generally need to be drained by a medical professional. If they aren't drained, it can lead to risk of infection, calcification, or a fibrous capsule which can complicate drainage. MLD massage along with proper aftercare can help reduce your risk greatly of getting seromas and fibrosis by reducing inflammation and cutting healing time down.
